Free VPS Hosting Options in 2026

Oracle and Google still publish ongoing free VM allowances. AWS and Azure are better described as time-limited free plans or credits. The important differences are expiry, usable compute, region, architecture, billing verification, and what happens when the free allowance ends.

Free VPS Options at a Glance

ProviderCurrent free VM offerExpiryMain limits and risksBest fit
Oracle Cloud Up to two AMD micro VMs, plus 1,500 Ampere A1 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours monthly. Oracle equates the A1 allowance to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB RAM total. Always Free resources are free for the life of the account within limits. Home region only. Arm compatibility matters. Capacity can be unavailable, and idle compute may be reclaimed. The largest ongoing published memory allowance here, if Arm and regional capacity work for the project.
Google Cloud One non-preemptible e2-micro VM equivalent per month, 30 GB-months of standard persistent disk, and 1 GB outbound transfer from North America. No fixed Free Tier end date, subject to eligibility and program changes. Only us-west1, us-central1, or us-east1. Billing account required. GPUs are excluded. A very small Linux service, monitor, proxy, or learning VM in an eligible US region.
AWS For accounts created on or after July 15, 2025: $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 additional credits for eligible services, including EC2. Free plan ends after six months or when credits run out. Credits expire within 12 months. Not an ongoing free VM. Eligible instance types and account rules differ from the older 12-month program. Short trials where the broader AWS ecosystem matters more than a permanent free server.
Microsoft Azure $200 credit for up to 30 days, plus monthly free amounts for selected services. Some VM allowances are for new customers for 12 months. Credit lasts up to 30 days. Time-limited free service amounts have their own end dates. Phone and supported card required. Moving to pay as you go is required to continue after the credit period; overages can then be billed. A short Windows or Linux VM evaluation with Azure services.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Need an ongoing allowance?Start with Oracle for more published resources or Google for a tiny x86 VM.
Need a short cloud trial?Compare AWS credits with Azure's 30-day credit and service-specific allowances.
Need stable production capacity?Use a paid VPS with a known monthly budget instead of designing around temporary credits or scarce free capacity.

What "Free" Does Not Include

A free compute allowance does not make every attached service free. Disks, snapshots, backups, public IP addresses, premium images, outbound traffic, load balancers, and resources in the wrong region can create charges. Read the offer label in the console, not just the marketing page.

Stopping an instance can leave storage and networking resources allocated. Before testing any cloud VM, create a budget alert, record the free-tier end date, and plan how to export the application and data.

Ongoing Free Tier vs Time-Limited Credit

Oracle Always Free and the Google Cloud Free Tier are recurring allowances rather than one-time trial balances. That does not guarantee capacity, performance, or permanent terms. Oracle explicitly notes that Always Free capacity can be unavailable and that idle instances may be reclaimed. Google limits its free VM to one small e2-micro equivalent in three US regions.

AWS and Azure give new users broader temporary access. That can be useful for testing a larger VM, but the project needs a shutdown or migration plan before credits or eligibility expire. Treat the end date as a hard operational requirement.

When a Paid VPS Is the Safer Choice

Use a paid VPS when the service must stay online, needs support, serves customers, stores important data, or cannot tolerate account limits and free-capacity shortages. The three links below are paid alternatives, not free-tier recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free VPS that does not expire?

Oracle Cloud labels eligible resources Always Free for the life of the account, while Google Cloud has monthly Compute Engine Free Tier limits with no fixed end date. Both offers have eligibility, region, and usage restrictions and can change.

Can I get a reliable free VPS without a credit card?

We could not verify a major general-purpose cloud VM offer that combines ongoing free compute with no billing or identity verification. Oracle says most users need a phone number and credit card, Google requires a billing account, and Azure requires a phone number plus a supported credit or debit card.

Which free VPS has the most published memory?

Oracle currently documents 1,500 Ampere A1 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours per month, equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory for an Always Free tenancy. Capacity can be unavailable, the shape uses Arm, and idle instances may be reclaimed.

Are AWS and Azure virtual machines free forever?

No. AWS accounts created on or after July 15, 2025 use credits and a free plan that lasts up to six months. Azure offers a 30-day credit and selected monthly free service amounts, some for 12 months. Check the account-specific offer before launching a VM.

How do I avoid surprise cloud charges?

Use only resources marked as free-tier eligible, create budgets and alerts before launching, check storage and network usage, and delete unused disks, snapshots, public IPs, and other resources. Stopping a VM does not always stop every attached-resource charge.
